"Signs of a Poet And a Daredevil
...Fiery displays of muscle, with poetic undercurrents to remind listeners that there is art within this music’s gymnastic contours...It is this balance of daredevil showmanship and pure musicality that explains the lure of Mr. Shehori’s playing."
The New York Times

"The Scarlatti sonatas he has selected are not among the most often heard and were obviously chosen for contrast in mood and style. Shehori treats them seriously, as a kind of precursor to Chopin-elegiac, expressive, logical, witty, with similar mixture of brilliance and lyricism-and plays them with an emotional depth and intensity that is not apparent in the printed notes. His articulation is crisp (he tosses off repeated notes, trills, and arpeggios with impressive ease), his phrasing is subtle and effective."

"Shehori makes the most of their strong contrasts, integrates their elaborate ornamentation nicely into the musical flow, and again his skillful phrasing and rhythmic zest are very engaging.   These performances will infuriate the purists, but they are likely to please anyone who cares about excellent piano playing and lovely music."

Brahms:  Sonata in D minor,
Op. 108, Allegro

CD 105
Henryk Szeryng, Violin
Mindru Katz, Piano

Brahms

Sonata for piano and violin
in D minor, Op. 108
Cesar Franck
Sonata for piano and violin
in A major

"It is hard to be objective about this recording because the intimacy of the playing draws me so deeply into the music. Szeryng and Katz draw out phrases, filling every segment of every second with beauty and meaning. Their phrases are astoundingly long and extraordinarily interesting...It is interesting to compare it with Szeryng wonderful 1960 recording of the Brahms Sonata with Rubinstein (RCA). Though I love the RCA recording, I find that Szeryng's recording with Katz goes even deeper. It is simply unlike anything else. This is a very special recording."

“I know of no one outside Horowitz who can produce such a thrilling brio.”
Gramophone

“Disc of The Month—The pianist is not only brilliant but has attained supreme control of the instrument, with a wonderful range of tonal colour.”
The Daily Telegraph

"This is Prokofiev ! as Horowitz, Lipatti or Hofmann might have executed the D-flat; for besides the clean, technical prowess and bravura, there is poetry and the unabashed love of the piano's colors. For that rare combination of steel and velvet, try Katz's Khachaturian Toccata, a rendition that rivals the Moiseiwitsch for elan and Lisztian brio."

“David Nadien has developed into a musical giant. He demonstrated that when he played Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto with elegance and grace, a tone pure and silken, and a technique that was a marvel of dizzying leaps and lightening runs. During the long ovation that followed, conductor Leonard Bernstein embraced Nadien.”
Time Magazine

“Mr. Nadien’s style, tone and technique are perfect.”

"...he manages to play with such bold imagination-in particular, such kaleidoscopic variety of touch-that you are apt to be spellbound."
Fanfare

“The Critics’ Choice—From every point of view this performance is way ahead of its rivals. The playing by Katz and the orchestra calls for superlatives. This is piano playing of the highest quality. It compels attention. It manages to be both technically brilliant and full of poetry.”

“Barere is an Anton Rubinstein in one hand, and a Liszt in the other.”
Alexander Glazunov

“Pianism in its highest estate was heard from Simon Barere, who enthralled his large audience with a display of overwhelming artistry at his recital last night in Carnegie Hall. Truly a giant of the keyboard, Mr. Barere provided a series of performances which were not only marvels of technical skill, but equally remarkable from the stand point of tone color and poetry...The speed and evenness of the octaves, the uncanny facility of the ‘quasi glissandi’ thirds and sixths, not to mention the supreme command of all the other technical problems involved, resulted in one of the most amazing feats of pianism heard in this city in many a year.”
Noel Straus

"Mordecai Shehori is a marvelous pianist in almost every conceivable category.  Indeed, if elegance had a middle name, it would be Shehori.  At last here is a pianist who not only understand the power of gentleness but puts it to work at every opportunity.  Though it goes without saying that his technique is impeccable, something more is afoot when he plays, as he found a way to harness the storm before the storm."
John Bell Young
